Tuesday, 1 July – St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly

A bit rolly-polly in our anchorage at times but we inflated the dinghy and went ashore to look around Hugh Town. Coffee and cake first of course. Not a lot had changed since the last time we were here. Perhaps less of the little quirky shops and more “boutiques” selling clothes and items focussed on the tourists. We wondered why it was so crowded and of course there was a cruise ship in port. It was the former Regal Princess that Richard was instrumental in the engineering design of (Renzo Piano the famous architect designed the exterior profile). It was amazing to think that over thirty years ago we were in the theatre on the ship in New York listening to Margaret Thatcher and Henry Kissinger. It must have been well designed if it is still going!!!

After shopping for food Anne went off for a walk and Richard went back to Harvard to keep an eye on things and generally have a relaxing afternoon.

Disappointed that we didn’t see the Ambience as she left, but a good day if a little overcast.

Porth Cressa beach with Ambiance, ex Regal Princess, in the background, anchored off the port.
