Thursday, 3 July – Tresco, Isles of Scilly

It would have been wrong to have spent all our time on St Mary’s and so we left on a rising tide to go over to Tresco, probably the next biggest island. This is only possible at certain times of the tide over drying ledges, so the navigation is important. However, we had done our homework so no problems. We knew there were visitor buoys in Old Grimsby Sound, to the north of the island, and when we arrived all but one were free so we moored up and were soon ashore.

Again coffee, tea and cake in the beach cafe and, after paying our mooring fee, we set off to enjoy all that Tresco has to offer. Anne wanted to visit the art gallery that we had enjoyed previously and we just generally wandered around enjoying all the beautiful flowers and scenery.

We did some limited shopping at the store and headed back to find Harvard jumping around on the mooring. Wind over tide causing big standing waves unfortunately. We probably wouldn’t use the moorings again but would anchor in St Helen’s Pool just north but with limited time we were keen to be quickly ashore without the hassle of anchoring and making sure it was set.

Despite the waves we were able to be safely back onboard and packed the dinghy away ready to head off early tomorrow back to the mainland as the forecast isn’t that great for Saturday onwards.
