Sunday, 6 July – Helford River to Falmouth

Richard has a meeting commitment in London on Wednesday and Anne would like to see the grandchildren again so we have decided to leave Harvard in Falmouth again and travel on Tuesday. However, we were running out of provisions so we decided to head to Falmouth a little ahead of time and make sure we could find a visitor mooring.

After lifting the anchor we sailed with just a little bit of genoa unrolled towards Falmouth. The wind was so strong we made over 6 knots with just this little bit of sail. Once in the harbour it was back on with the engine and we found a free visitor mooring buoy (one we had used before) and managed to feed the mooring line through the eye on the buoy first time. Anne steers and Richard has to lie on his stomach on the side deck and feed the line through as the buoy comes alongside the boat. This is the technique we were taught on our RYA courses but most people just seem to lasso the buoy and then sort out the lines from a dinghy. The wind was really strong so it was quite a challenge, but we managed!!

Once we were all sorted we booked our train tickets and then inflated the dinghy and headed ashore. We paid our mooring fee for 6 nights and then did some shopping. Richard found a pub showing the British Grand Prix so that kept him happy and then it was back onboard for a cosy supper with the wind still blowing strongly.
