Sunday, 13 July – Falmouth to the Helford River

Now we knew we were well anchored, having been through a tide cycle, we went ashore, left the dinghy on the beach and took the footpath to St Mawes. It was quite busy so, after buying a sandwich for lunch, we were happy to head out of town away from the crowds to take a circular route back to St Just. Some great views.

St Just is always interesting even though we have been there a few times before. We looked around the church and then carried on along the coast path back to where we had joined it from the beach to find the dinghy safe and sound. Soon back onboard Harvard after a nice walk (about 5 miles). It was great to stretch our legs after too much sitting on trains.

As the wind was now forecast to go back westerly we decided to head back to the Helford River, one of our favourite spots. After lifting the anchor we motored out of the harbour to find the easterly wind had kicked up a big sea and we were rolling around a lot. We managed to raise some sail to dampen the rolling and even tried sailing for a bit as the wind backed through the south towards south west. However, there was not enough wind so we motor sailed most of the way and dropped anchor on the south side of the river, opposite Durgan. Although the wind had changed, the easterly swell coming in made it quite uncomfortable so we rolled around a bit but it was too late to change our plans and we would just have to wait until the new wind knocked the swell down.
