Shakedown cruise – Wednesday, 7 May – Bembridge

Another of our friends from King George Sailing Club now lives on the Isle of Wight in St Helens so we met up with him for a coffee and a chat and caught up with all his news. He is a sailing instructor and will be heading up to Orkney for the Island Games in July supporting the sailing team https://www.iiga.org It sounds like a lot of hard work so we hope he enjoys it.

Richard and Tony

After leaving Tony we took the ferry across to Bembridge and started a circular walk up to the monument and Bembridge Fort that overlook the harbour. The ferry driver/harbourmaster told us that the common preconception is that the bar outside the harbour is a sand bar when in fact it is rock and an old causeway out to the fort offshore, so he said to be sure not to run aground!

It was a warm day and we found it tough but we made it to the monument where we had our picnic lunch. By sheer coincidence we met up with one of Anne’s pottery friends from Romsey so that was a bit of fun. The return part of the walk was slightly easier going but we were still pretty tired when we arrived back just in time for Richard to have a beer at the bar in the marina before it closed.
