Monday, 26 May – the Folly, Cowes to Yarmouth

It was really quiet up at the Folly, especially for a bank holiday weekend. Whether that was because of the weather forecast or generally less enthusiasm for sailing, who knows. Anyway we decided to press on even though strong west to south westerly winds forecast. In the river off Cowes we put two reefs in the mainsail and once out unfurled just a little genoa to start beating down the western Solent into a strong breeze. Water all over the deck with Richard taking a few waves in the face on trimming duty and Anne helming. We were soon in over 30 knots apparent wind (force 7, again!) but happily with the tide underneath us it didn’t take too long to be outside Yarmouth harbour and we timed our entrance well. No harbourmaster launch on duty until we were well inside. Some confusion about where we were meant to berth but we made up our own minds as we needed to berth head to wind. Harvard really does not like going down wind into a berth!!

Again it wasn’t busy, which was surprising, and we were told we could stay where we had moored up. It was clear we were going to need snubbers in the mooring lines so took a little time to fit them. A good move as it turned out. The forecast was pretty dire so we booked in for 2 nights and after tidying up enjoyed a nice shower, a walk around town and a nice beer in the Wheatsheaf pub.
