Monday, 14 July – Helford River

The wind was round to the west, quite strong and kicked up quite a chop which meant that we were very wet once we had taken the dinghy up to the Helford River Sailing Club. We made use of the washing machine there and the showers before heading off for a really great lunch at the Holy Mackerel Cafe, an old converted chapel. Then we wandered into Helford itself and visited the village store. Very expensive as one might expect.

We dropped by the Shipwrights Arms as it is somewhere we always visited when on family holidays at Durgan as a special treat. We went inside just to shelter from a passing shower. A lot of work has been completed since we were last there including adding more guest accommodation. We talked to a nice man cleaning the slipway and he said it was about to close altogether in the spring but that Roger Taylor the drummer from the group Queen had bought it for his son Rufus (also a drummer with The Darkness) to run. He said they had plans to liven the place up!!!

By the time we were back at the Sailing Club the tide had gone right out so the dinghy was high and dry. We waited an hour or so and chatted to some other friendly sailors to pass the time. Then once afloat it was back to Harvard with an approaching westerly gale forecast.

View from the sailing club with most of the dinghies, including ours, high and dry.
