Friday, 12 July, Newlyn to Helford River

A late start to time the tide turning round the Lizard. Just as well as in the morning there was a lot of mist and drizzle and you couldn’t see very far. Anyway, we were off after lunch and arrived at the Lizard just as the tide was turning. We were hoping for a favourable tide going northeast from the Lizard as described in the pilot guide and showed on the current station on the chart plotter. It never really set in and we had a relatively slow sail to the The Manacles. The speed through the water was good but there was no tide helping us. We tacked towards the Helford and a couple of miles out we started the engine and motored in to anchor off Grebe Beach. Once again embarrassed that our navigation lights weren’t working but managed to be set before it was totally dark. A late supper and to bed.

On the way to the Lizard, past St Michael’s Mount.
