Sunday, 19 May, Lochboisdale to Castlebay (Barra)

Left Lochboisdale on a cold grey morning after trying to pay our harbour dues. The harbourmaster couldn’t make the card machine work so he said we could have a free night! We set off with no wind and once out of the harbour headed south southwest towards Barra, the southernmost island of the Outer Hebrides. Eventually the wind filled in and we had a fine sail on a close reach until the wind died as we were entering the sound into Castlebay. We motored the last few miles and of course the wind came up again as we approached the harbour but we were soon safely moored up on the pontoon system that has recently been installed.

Wandered around, did some shopping and visited the Castlebay Hotel bar that was very lively. In fact too lively when a fight broke out and that resulted in the police turning up after it was all over!! We called in at the community shop that had opened in anticipation of the ferry arriving from Oban and then it was back onboard for supper.

There are strong winds forecast for Wednesday night through Thursday so we have to decide where to head to for shelter. Probably towards Tobermory but the forecast for tomorrow is for very light winds so it could be a lot of time using the engine. We shall see.
