Woke up to a reasonable morning, no rain and slightly overcast. We had studied the bus timetables and decided to take the bus to Calgary on the west coast of Mull. The bus left at 09:30 and we were in good time to enjoy the views of Tobermory before boarding the 494 bus. What a drive through spectacular scenery along a single track road with passing places. Hats off to the bus driver who managed to drive a medium sized bus along a really difficult road, although we suppose he has done it many times.
Calgary in Canada is supposed to be named after Calgary on Mull because when the British established a fort in Canada (at the place that is now Calgary) the commander was from Mull and he decided to name the fort after his home village. After the bus dropped us off there is a beautiful beach to explore and a nature walk through woods and a sculpture park that brings you out at a gallery and café. Of course after a look around the gallery we had to have refreshments including a really good bacon and egg breakfast sandwich for Richard!!!
There are only three buses a day and we were there for the 13:25 back to Tobermory with the same driver. The novelty had worn off a bit on the return journey and all the jolting and stop starting became a bit wearing but we think we saw an eagle which was nice. It seemed too big to be a buzzard, but who knows, we count it as a sighting at least!!
When we arrived back in Tobermory we were surprised to see all the yachts in the harbour, whether on the pontoons or moorings, bouncing around. In fairness the boys in Barra had warned us that Tobermory was uncomfortable in northerly winds. On the other hand when we had quizzed the harbour master yesterday he said we would be fine. Anyway, nothing we could do now so we bought some provisions and with trepidation rowed out to Harvard. We actually had no problems and were soon safely ensconced down below as it started to drizzle. All thought of going back ashore for a shower postponed. We will have to stay smelly for another day!!! Let’s hope that once this weather system passes things will calm down.
